Iraq Study group Report |
December 6, 2006: Led by former Secretary of State James Baker and former Democratic Congressman Lee Hamilton,[1] the Iraq Study group released a report on the status of Iraq. According to the study, the “U.S. troops seem to be caught in a mission that has no foreseeable end,” and that “the situation in Iraq is grave and deteriorating.”[2] The report laid out 79 recommendations as to how the situation in Iraq could be improved.[3] Some of the key ones included recommendations numbers 22, 35, and 40. Recommendation 22 said that the president should state the fact that the US is not going to set up a permanent military base in Iraq, but is willing to set up a temporary one if the Iraqi government requests one.[4] Recommendation 35 was saying that the US should attempt to communicate with all of the parties in Iraq, with the exception of al Qaeda. As well, the US should find a way to talk to all militia and insurgent leaders in Iraq.[5] Recommendation 40 said that the US should not make a promise to keep large amounts of US forces in Iraq.[6] These recommendations, along with the 73 other were expected to drastically improve how Iraq was.
