Saddam Hussein Executed |
December 30, 2006: On this date, right before 6 am in an Iraqi military facility in northern Baghdad,[1] Saddam Hussein was hung in front of a cheering crowd of spectators.[2] As President Bush stated “When it came to execute him, it looked like it was kind of a revenge killing. And it sent a mixed signal to the American people and the people around the world. And it just goes to show that this is a government that has still got some maturation to do.”[3] While this execution was an important step forward in the Iraqi government, and the end of an era, it did not mean that all of the problems in Iraq were fixed. As the president mentioned, it is a young government with improvement to seek out. The people still had a long way to go towards the improvement of their country. However, this did not deter the people from being, in general, very happy with the news. Hundreds of people in the Shiite section of Sadr City danced in the streets,[4] celebrating the execution. However, Sunni loyalists were not happy. They lamented his death, and some even started reprisal attacks from these loyalists at the news.[5] However, this was not a major uprising.
