Assault on fallujah |
October 7, 2004: The city of Fallujah was taken over by insurgents, which caused chaos in the city. After that the US stepped in which began the assault on Fallujah. The US planned the attack to help evacuate Iraqi citizens and to drive central Iraqi insurgents out of the city and this occurred from October 14, 2004 to November 16, 2004. The insurgent leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqwi, and about 5,000 insurgents took over Fallujah city. Before attacking Fallujah from the ground, Fallujah was bombarded by numerous airstrikes targeting safe houses for insurgents stronghold. [i] These airstrikes also cut power to Fallujah city before the ground assault. The US surrounded the northern part of the city to surprise the enemy, which expected the US to come from the south. This resulted in a victory for the US but some troops used irresponsible use of force towards Iraqi civilians.[ii] After the attack was finished, the insurgents progress was hindered and the citizens were allowed to regain the city and rebuild what was destroyed.
